Can you add RAM through Thunderbolt 3?
No. The memory bus is connected directly to the CPU while the Thunderbolt connector is run from to the chipset. It just isn’t fast enough to serve as system memory.
Can RAM be connected externally?
There is no external way to add RAM because the power supply and interface for RAM reside on the motherboard. You can add extra memory by letting your USB flash drive act as ReadyBoost. This can help when your internal memory isn’t enough.
Is it possible to add external RAM to MacBook Pro?
While it is still impossible to upgrade memory externally, there are many ultra-fast external storage solutions, docks that add ports, or even external GPU solutions for Macs with non-upgradable components.
Can you add external RAM to a MacBook Air?
The short answer to this question is you cannot upgrade the RAM in the MacBook Air models as it soldered in place. The longer answer is that some models could be upgraded with twice as much RAM as stock at the time of purchase at additional cost, but cannot be upgraded at all afterwards.

Does ReadyBoost increase RAM?
ReadyBoost will NOT increase RAM. Rather, if you have a fast enough flash drive you will make Windows itself slightly faster.
How do I increase RAM on my external hard drive?

Can NVMe be used as RAM?
However, while a NVMe drive makes a great virtual memeory drive, NVMe is a poor substitute for RAM. NVMe has roughly the equal bandwidth as DDR4 RAM but compared to RAM, its latency, or the speed at which you can access bits of data falls far short of RAM.
