Are Ents trees?
Ents are a species of beings in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy world Middle-earth who closely resemble trees; their leader is Treebeard of Fangorn forest. They are similar to the talking trees in folklore around the world. Their name is derived from the Old English word for giant.

How did they lose the Entwives?
When Sauron burned that region to stop the advance of the Last Alliance down the Anduin, the Entwives were likely wiped out, although some might have been captured and enslaved as agricultural workers or have escaped into the east of Middle-earth. The Ents held that the Entwives were lost.
What is the difference between an ENT and an Entwife?
The male Ents resemble wild forest trees that they guard (oaks, rowans, etc.), but the Entwives guarded agricultural plants, and Tolkien seems to imply that they resembled the various agricultural plants they guarded. Treebeard remarks that their hair was the hue of ripe corn (grain).
