In 2017, India’s Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said he wanted only electric vehicles on Indian roads by the end of 2030 – an impossible target that he has since revised. Now, the plan is to have 30\% of private cars, 70\% of commercial vehicles, 40\% of buses and 80\% of two and three-wheelers go electric by 2030.

Are electric vehicles viable in India?

The lack of charging infrastructure across the length and breadth of the country add to the non-viability of EVs in India. For the moment, electric vehicles have to make do with constraints, which means being confined to some large urban areas with developed charging infrastructure.

While there is a vision for 100\% electric vehicles by 2030, most industry experts indicate that around 40-45\% EV conversion by 2030 is a realistic expectation. A major push towards EVs will be led by the public transportation requirements in India – Fleet cars, E-Buses,3 wheelers, and 2 wheelers.

Why are electric cars not sold in India?

The current reason for not selling electric cars in India is the lack of infrastructures. India doesn’t have much electric power outlets to charge the vehicles and also in India most of the people have single phase connection in their home so its take too much of time to charge the vehicles.

Is India ready for a green future for mobility?

Recognizing this aspect, the Government of India, is working towards developing a mobility option which is ‘Shared, Connected and ELectric’. There is an increased need to prepare for a green future for Indian mobility and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.

JSW Energy, a unit of the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group, plans to launch EVs and enter the renewable energy storage sector in India by 2020, citing a lull in the power generation sector. The firm has committed about Rs4,000 crore for the next three years.
