Why is the UK not part of the Schengen Area?

The UK opted out of the invite to be part of the Schengen Area because of our geography – as an island we wanted to keep our border controls to stay in control of illegal immigration. If you’re from the UK, you can enter and remain in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days, within a 180 days period, without a need to obtain a Schengen visa.

Is there a lounge at the airport when leaving the Schengen zone?

While larger airports will often have lounges within both Schengen and non-Schengen airside departure areas, if you are leaving the Schengen zone be careful to check there is a lounge after passport control, before having your passport stamped to exit the country, if you still have plenty of time before your flight.
