Why is my wood stain uneven?

Botching happens when areas of varying wood density absorb liquid stain differently, resulting in an unevenly stained surface that detracts from the natural beauty of the grain. Once those are gone, apply a gel stain or equalize the wood density with a washcoat.

Why is my stain blotchy?

Blotchy stain often occurs because wood unevenly absorbs stain, causing some areas to be darker than others. Blotchy stain is more likely to happen on soft woods such as pine. Stain rarely turns out blotchy on hard wood like oak.

Will sanding remove stain?

Once the wood is dry, sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. If working on a large area, use an electric hand sander. Continue sanding until you remove all traces of the varnish and stain. As you continue to sand, the existing stain will fade away, and the raw wood beneath will be exposed.

  1. Soak a clean cloth in paint thinner.
  2. Rub the cloth over the dark areas of the lap marks.

  4. Let it sit for two minutes.
