The Eastern Coast is smooth and unfit for making ports. So, very few ports are developed there. West coast is coast of submergence (except Malabar Coast) while east coast is an emergent coast. Continental shelfon east extends up to 500 km into the sea, so, difficult to develop good ports and harbours.

Answer:The eastern coast of India is formed due to the depositional work of eastward flowing river meeting the Bay of Bengal. Therefore, there are fewer natural ports on the eastern coast of India.

i) Because eastern coast has delta formations by rivers which is actually extension of land in the sea. ii) But on the western costs – submergence occurs no delta formation. iii) Because of submergence, west coast produce better harbours.
