Why does an electric car not need gears?

Because an electric car doesn’t need a clutch, it also doesn’t require gears. Electric vehicles don’t feature a multi-speed gearbox like conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. In a combustion engine, the engine generates torque, which is used for acceleration, and power in a narrow band of engine speeds, or gears.

EV motors often provide up to 15,000 revolutions per minute (rpm), compared to less than 8,000 rpm for internal combustion engines (consumer cars usually provide less than 6,000). The high rpm of the electric motor eliminates the need for heavy and expensive transmissions.

Because electric vehicles don’t have a clutch or a gearbox with different speeds like a conventional diesel or petrol vehicle, they get away with only a single gear (drive) and a reverse. Because of this, electric vehicles can change speeds easily without the need to adjust gears to keep the engine happy.

If you wish to drive conservatively, it is best to keep your engine RPM as low as possible. Driving at a higher RPM will demand more fuel / emissions and cause the engine to work harder. Sometimes, a problem in your vehicle can cause your engine’s RPM to reach a higher level than normal.

By turning more rpm, we can use a greater gear ratio to produce more mechanical advantage to accelerate the car. There are limits to engine speed, of course. Higher rpm increases parasitic losses from friction and windage. The stability of the valvetrain also restricts engine rpm.
