This has been clearly mentioned in Valmiki Ramayana. He went to get the golden deer for Sitamma as she wanted to play with it but not eat it,but He had to kill it bcoz of it imitating his voice and tryin to fool them. He sensed a danger and realised the Rakshasa-Maya and shot it.
