Why did my therapist end the session early?
A therapist may finish a session early if he/she believes that the client’s exploration of their internal world and its connection with their behaviours has reached a critical juncture.
Can therapy sessions end early?
Clear therapeutic goals and beginning termination early can have positive, long-lasting impacts, consolidating learnings and readying the client to “move forward positively when treatment ends” (Barnett, 2016). Agree on the goals and how the therapy will end in earlier sessions.
Do therapists secretly judge you?
Our job is to judge, and typically not secretly. We’re to help the patient by sorting through how they approach life and whether their approach is going to be successful or not. That’s part of what they expect: assess what’s wrong and get them the appropriate tools. Professionals profess, which is to judge.

However, I have made some truly boneheaded mistakes. And unfortunately I can’t blame them all on being a young therapist at the start of my career. Some of these mistakes I have made recently. Do you feel like a competent therapist?
Well, almost all of them. They give me good feedback on my counseling skills. It feels like there is a lot of trust built up between me and them. All in all, I feel like a very competent therapist. I enjoy what I do and I love to keep learning. However, I have made some truly boneheaded mistakes.
How do you feel about being a therapist?
I have been a therapist since 2005. And if I do say so myself, I think I’m pretty good. I have a solid rapport with all my clients. I see growth with all of them. Well, almost all of them. They give me good feedback on my counseling skills. It feels like there is a lot of trust built up between me and them.
Are therapists supposed to give advice?
Therapists aren’t supposed to give advice and I promise you I do my best to stay away from falling into the advice giving trap. But sometimes it’s just so tempting, isn’t it?
