Why are pistons round and not square?

As you might expect, pistons are subjected to more heat, pressure and movement than nearly any other engine part. Pistons that are elliptical, or shaped like ovals, become more circular when heat is applied. This allows for improved sealing when the cylinder meets the combustion chamber for greater efficiency.

Why is the piston head not flat?

Ovality is necessary for the piston to move up and down in the cylinder bore, as the crankshaft and connecting rod try to force the piston upward, and combustion forces the piston downward, ovality allows the piston to move without binding in the round cylinder bore.”

Why are cylinders round?

The advantage of being round or cylindrical is that the entire cylinder has the same pressure. If there is less and more pressure at some places then it can be dangerous. In such a situation, it is easy to carry any pressurized gas in the container without connors.

Why is a square engine better?

In this engine, the stroke-length is longer than the cylinder bore. Generally, ‘Under-Square’ design tends to produce comparatively higher torque. Hence, engineers also refer to it as ‘high-torque’ engine. As the stroke-length is long, the piston has to travel a longer distance which tends to increase engine’s torque.

Because these characteristics favor higher engine speeds, oversquare engines are often tuned to develop peak torque at a relatively high speed. Thus an excessively high ratio can lead to a decreased thermal efficiency compared to other engine geometries.
