Why a fuzzy shadow is formed?

When we move to a real source, composed of a very large number of sources, we find the grays blending smoothly together, varying from light to dark gradually. This is the “fuzzy” area, the “fuzzy shadow” that we get when the source has size.

Why do shadows formed in sunlight have sharp edges?

The edges of the shadow is the area where the object is more or less blocking the light source. If the light source is partly covered by the object by 50\%, the light intensity will be 50\%. This is what happens in the shadow edge where the intensity is 50\%. Only half of the light source is visible at that position.

What are soft shadows?

Soft light tends to “wrap” around subjects, producing shadows with soft, fuzzy edges. Softness of light increases with the size of the light source, as the emitted light rays will travel in many directions as they move toward the subject.

What happens to the size of the fuzzy region around the edge when the object is moved closer to the light source?

What phenomenon might observe when shadows are formed on astronomical object?

The only astronomical objects able to project visible shadows onto Earth are the Sun, the Moon, and in the right conditions, Venus or Jupiter. Night is caused by the hemisphere of a planet facing its orbital star blocking its sunlight. A shadow cast by the Earth onto the Moon is a lunar eclipse.
