Crown molding is usually nailed to the wall studs along the bottom edge and into the ceiling joists above–a lot of stud-finder work.

Where do you nail molding?

Nailing into the lower third of the molding increases the chance that you’ll hit the bottom plate inside of the wall. If installing crown molding, you’ll want to nail into the joists and studs at the top and bottom of the molding, which are usually every 16 inches.

Does crown molding need to be nailed into studs?

Crown moldings, or any corner trims really should be nailed to a stud, not simply into unbacked drywall. Without good support, the molding will warp out from the wall causing gaps in coverage to open along the edges.

Crown moulding is installed in the reverse fashion of base moulding. The deeper grooves go on the bottom, and shallower grooves belong on the top. Generally, crown moulding extends further down the wall than on the ceiling. The concave (cove) side goes down, and the convex (rounded) side goes up.

Typically crown moulding gets nailed to a framed stud wall. Nailing into the top plates or studs at the bottom of the crown fastens it. Then cross nailing will hold the top tight to most ceilings. You can also caulk the top and bottom joints so it’s secure as a system.

Crown is typically nailed up with a 2” finishing nail and a compressor and finishing gun. Outside corners are usually done with a brad nailer and 1” brad nails with glue. Studs are generally 3-1/2”, drywall a ½” and the crown moulding a minimum of ½”; therefore 2” finishing nails are necessary.

The rule of thumb with nails… 2 points if you get the pun… is that you should choose a nail that is three times as long as the thickness of the material you are fastening. If you want to hold 1/2″ drywall to a stud wall, the length of the nails should be at least 1 1/2″.

Measure the wall again.

  • Cut the moulding 1/8-inch longer than measured. The extra length will help push the cope joint closed when installing crown moulding.
  • Make a square cut on the uncoped end of the crown moulding.
  • Flex the moulding in place.
  • Nail or glue the moulding to the wall and ceiling.
  • Putty any nail holes.
  • How do I install crown molding?

    To install crown molding: Measure the length of each wall. Set the miter saw to a 45° angle. Position the bottom of the molding against the saw fence and table. Tilt the molding so the back is flush with the saw fence. Cut the crown molding to length. Hold the molding on the wall, and nail it in place to the studs.

    What size nails for molding?

    For wood-to-wood nailing, the length of the nails should be twice the thickness of the molding. If you’re nailing thru drywall , add the drywall thickness (typically 1/2”) The size (gauge) should be as small as possible. If you can get away with it, 23 gauge pin nails wouldn’t require filling.
