Vocaloid is a singing voice synthesizer. In other words, a piece of software that enables users to synthesize singing by typing in lyrics and melody. One of the better known vocaloids is Hatsune Miku. At the moment there is no anime with vocaloids. There is only a manga called: Hatsune Mix.

A Vocaloid, in simple terms, is a piece of voice sythysizing software that takes sounds made by a base human voice and puts them together to form words; or in this case taking words and assembling them to a musical rhythm to form a song.

Except the singer in question is not a person. Her name is Hatsune Miku. Miku is permanently 16 years old, but she’s 11 now. She was created in 2007 by Crypton Future Media, a software firm based out of Sapporo, Japan, on the northern island of Hokkaido.

The vocaloid first became popular after she appeared on the Nico Nico Douga website, a YouTube-like video-streaming site, and she captivated viewers with her high and sweet voice. UTAU – This is a free VOCALOID-like software which is heavily supported as an alternative to VOCALOID itself. Though mostly in Japanese, the fandom has produced thousands of voicebanks for the software in various languages. Though some are paid-releases, the majority are free.
