What is the difference between ERIG and HRIG?

What is the difference between ERIG and HRIG? ERIG is equine RIG and is produced in horses. HRIG is human RIG and is produced in humans. Both products contain antibodies specifically made against rabies virus.

When should ERIG be given?

As equine rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG): 40 IU/kg. Administer as a single dose on the 1st day of rabies vaccine (or within 7 days after) via infiltration into and around the cleansed wound.

Is rabies vaccine effective without immunoglobulin?

If no immunoglobulin is available, they have only 1 therapy option: use of a vaccine schedule that produces the highest and, hopefully, earliest neutralizing antibody response. However, treatment failures must still be expected.

Do I need HRIG?

Not everyone potentially exposed to rabies or ABLV will be advised to have HRIG. For example, HRIG is generally not required for people who have been previously vaccinated against rabies. When recommended, it is important to have the HRIG as well as the vaccine to ensure complete protection against rabies or ABLV.

Human Rabies Immune Globulin (HRIG) Rabies IG (human) (RIG) is always used in association with rabies vaccine. HRIG is administered to previously unvaccinated persons to provide rabies virus neutralizing antibody until the patient responds to vaccination by actively producing virus-neutralizing antibodies.

A person who has been previously vaccinated should get 2 doses of rabies vaccine and does not need Rabies Immune Globulin.

Can you get rabies from a bat without being bitten?

Rabies is rare in the United States, with only one to three human cases occurring here each year. But any potential exposure to a bat has to be taken seriously, because bites can be extremely hard to detect and cases of rabies have occurred in the absence of a recognized bat bite.
