Sergei Korolev is the man responsible for the first human spaceflight. Although the world knew of his achievements – Sputnik, Vostok, Soyuz – the man himself remained a total mystery until his death, as his identity was a well-kept state secret.

Why was Korolev sent to the Gulag?

On 27 June 1938, four secret service agents broke into his apartment and arrested him as a spy. Korolev was beaten. In the end, Korolev was forced to admit to crimes of treason and sabotage and was sentenced to 10 years’ hard labour at the Kolyma gold mine, the most notorious of all Gulag prison camps.
