Objective reality means that something is actual (so it exists) independent of the mind. Likewise too, then, it might be the case that each beautiful thing has the certain features, like symmetry or orderliness, and that these features are the very reason that each beautiful thing seems to us to be “beautiful.” However, this would in no way imply that these features are “beauty,” or that “beauty” is an objective predicate.

What is beauty and why does it matter?

Beauty is something we share, or something we want to share, and shared experiences of beauty are particularly intense forms of communication. Thus, the experience of beauty is not primarily within the skull of the experiencer, but connects observers and objects such as works of art and literature in communities of appreciation.

What if beauty is not real?

If beauty is not real, then there are no objectively “beautiul objects” or “beautiful ideas.” Depite our sentiments, we must nobly and strictly reject all forms of fantastic nonsense in the ongoing pursuit of scientific and philosophical purity.
