Is it correct to say reading for a degree?

In reality though, it sounds a bit pretentious except in formal contexts, day to day I was studying physics. I am reading for Physics. I am reading for a degree in Physics. I read for Physics.

Why do people say reading for a degree?

It refers to times in the past when readers would read in class and then give the students lots of reading assignments for independent reading to be discussed with a tutor. It’s a pretty archaic term, anyone who uses it is being a touch pretentious.

If you wanted a class in a subject taught by a scholar, you paid money to the scholar and took the class. Other classes were not part of the deal. You wanted to learn a subject, so you “read” the subject.
