Is iGEM worth?
iGEM is an exceptional and educational experience which I highly urge you to take part in it. Even if you want to move into areas like project management, communications or other non-scientific roles, iGEM experience will not be sufficient.
Is biotechnology the same as synthetic biology?
Biotechnology is a broad term encompassing the application of biological components or processes to advance human purposes. Synthetic biology refers to a set of concepts, approaches, and tools within biotechnology that enable the modification or creation of biological organisms.
Do awards matter in college admissions?
Awards are not by any means the most important component of your application, but they definitely showcase your talents and strongest abilities. While listing awards shows college admissions that you excelled in one more more things, they don’t really have the potential to make or break your application.
How many medals can a team win in iGEM?
Teams can only win one medal in a given iGEM year. Teams must nominate themselves using the Judging Form. Failure to successfully complete the Judging Form will prevent the judges from evaluating your team for medals. Please see our Judging Form information pagefor more details.
Can I participate in an InterLab study for iGEM 2019?
As announced last year during the Giant Jamboree, we will NOT be holding an InterLab Study for iGEM 2019. This means the 2019 teams will not be able to participate in an interlab study for this bronze medal criterion. All teams can earn a medal. Teams can only win one medal in a given iGEM year.

What’s new at iGEM?
New – Type IIS Parts Fully Supported for Medals and Awards Building upon our previous support for PhytoBricks (a Type IIS system for plant parts), iGEM teams can now create new parts following iGEM’s Type IIS Standard. Your team can choose to work with either BioBrick RFC10or Type IIScompatible parts.
