How do you start an iGEM team?

How many people can be in an iGEM team?
There is no upper limit on the number of students in an iGEM team. We recommend creating a team of around 8 – 15 people with different backgrounds who can enrich the team.

Is iGEM paid?
Each team pays one registration fee. The team fee is the participation fee to take part in the iGEM Competition and includes associated materials and support. Every team must pay the same fee regardless of section, track, region, etc.
Is IGEM a team-based program?
No, iGEM is a team-based program. The interactions of the team members and their advisors are an important part of the iGEM activity. Also, iGEM requires a major effort from the team and it is unlikely that an individual undergraduate student could compete effectively. Finally, the involvement of two instructors is also part of the iGEM program.

In 2018, iGEM hosted over 320 international, multidisciplinary teams eager to share their work. This five-day event is a celebration of synthetic biology accomplishments, featuring presentations, poster sessions, workshops and social events.

When is the 2019 iGEM Jamboree?
October 31 – November 4, 2019. Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA, USA. The Giant Jamboree is an annual event that showcases work from the iGEM season. All participating iGEM teams are invited to present their synthetic biology projects and compete for prizes.
