Do charities wash clothes before selling?

People sometimes ask me whether clothes donated to charity shops are washed before they go on sale. I can’t speak for every charity shop but, in general, I would say the answer is no. As a complete aside, the steamers used in charity shops are amazing.

What do charity shops do with unsold items?

Estimates vary, but little more than half of donated clothes make it to the shop floor, according to the Charity Retail Association (CRA). Instead, leftovers and items that don’t sell quickly are bought by rag merchants, who also buy clothes donated through textile recycling schemes.

Does goodwill wash donated clothes before selling?

Goodwill does not prepare items before they sell them. They don’t wash clothes, wipe off dirt or dust from items, or put in missing screws or parts that some items need. If you’re going to donate any material goods, then you should clean and prepare them.

Should you wash clothes from a charity shop?

Plenty of germs from sick people, people trying them on, dust and other things getting into the clothing, etc.,. So it’s definitely important to wash your clothes once you get them from a charity.

Why do all thrift stores smell the same?

When things sit for years, they accumulate dust, dirt, residue, or even mold. While Goodwill/Savers and other thrift stores do their best to put clean merchandise on the shelves, they can only do so much and the musty/dusty smell is going to persist.

Why do people still thrift shop?

Though I can shop at major department stores now, I still choose to thrift. Due to thrift shopping’s popularity, it’s for people of all walks and every income bracket. People who would normally never step foot in a secondhand shop are now proud thrifters who either shop for their own closets or search for gems they can resell.

Since everyone isn’t there with the same intention, the final resting place of the garments in the thrift store can vary. I do resell some of my thrifted finds, either after I’ve worn them or if it’s a great piece I can flip for serious cash.
