Are the great Eagles Maiar?
In earlier texts, Tolkien once envisioned the Great Eagles as bird-shaped Maiar. Eventually, Tolkien decided that the Great Eagles were animals that had been “taught language by the Valar, and raised to a higher level — but they still had no fëar.”
Is Gwaihir a Maiar?
Tolkien’s original idea for the great eagles was that they were Maiar in eagle forms. Huan and Sorontar could be Maiar – emissaries of Manwe. But unfortunately in The Lord of the Rings Gwaihir and Landroval are said to be descendants of Sorontar.
Are ents Maiar?
They weren’t Maiar, but they came pretty close. The Maiar are Ainur, or spirits that were created before the Creation of the Earth. They Ents were made by the Creator after the world had been made, but they were not Ainur that had come down to Arda. They were a seperate sapient species, like the Dwarves, Elves and Men.
Are the eagles more powerful than Gandalf?
The eagles seem to have donned physical shapes, and breed, as Thorondor was their ancestor. They are powerful, but of less interventionist nature than Gandalf.

Why didn’t they just ride the eagles to Mordor?
The eagles can’t carry the Fellowship to Mordor because Gandalf can’t simply summon a squadron of birds to divebomb Mount Doom. This is the real reason the eagles question will never die: It’s too appetizing for The Lord of the Rings fans. The Lord of the Rings doesn’t have plot holes.
