The finest of these carpets can take months, and even years to be made. Finer yarns like silk and cotton yields light-weight and intricate designs and takes much longer to weave compared to wool yarns. Hence, the prices of the rugs made from finer yarns are higher than the ones made completely of wool.

Most weavers use cotton to make the wefts and warps in tabriz rugs. However, wool sometimes gets used to make the foundation of tribal rugs, and silk serves as a pile and foundation. Pile is a term used in rug weaving to refer to the fiber or material. Persian-made rugs use wool, cotton, or silk materials.

What techniques are used to make Persian rugs?

One of these techniques is called slit weaving, in which gaps are left between the boundaries in the weft threads of color blocks that are woven to form the patterns on the carpet. Another method, called dove tailing, connects the borders between color blocks by interlocking weft threads.

How can you tell if a Persian rug is real?

Authentic Persian rugs are always hand-knotted. The process is such that the pattern on the underside of the rug matches the pattern on the top of the rug. There is no other backing added to the underside. The absence of any type of backing results in a soft underside.

There are three major kinds of Pakistani knotted rugs: Bokhara, Persian and Tribal (Baluchi, Beljik, Chobi, Gabbeh , Heriz , Kazak , Khan-Mamdi, Shairwan, Qashqai). Although these rugs have their differences, their durability and merit as fine, handcrafted rugs are the same.
