Why do they call Saruman Sharkey?

“Sharkey” was actually “Sharku.” How the name changed isn’t clear – perhaps the hobbits simply misheard the ruffians, believed they were saying “Sharkey”, and went with it. The “ey” ending is, in English names, a diminutive ending, which would explain to English readers why Saruman assumed it was an affectionate name.
