For an additive system, light is created directly. This means that the primary colors of the most effective additive color system are simply red, green, and blue (RGB). This is why most computer screens, from iPods to televisions, contain a grid of little red-, green-, and blue-emitting light sources.

Why does it make sense that our electronic displays only need red green and blue pixels to show color?

They use the additive colour system because they are emissive devices. If there is no source of input, they will be black. In the additive colour system, when Red, Green and Blue LIGHT come together, it results in white light. Hence, you see these in the pixels when magnified.

Does each pixel contain a red green and blue light?
