What order do trumpet valves go in?
There are three valves, or pistons, on a trumpet; the first, second and third. The first valve is closest to the player holding the horn and the third valve is closest to the bell. The second valve is in-between the first and third.
Are trumpet valves interchangeable?
Yes and no. Valves and valve casings will all be slightly different, and yes, they are the most important and delicate part of your horn. A scratch or small bend in a pipe isn’t going to do much of anything to playability, but a small scratch in your valve casing can ruin a horn.
How do you put valves back in a baritone?
To oil your baritone valves:
- Unscrew the valve at the top of the casing.
- Lift the valve half-way out of the casing.
- Apply a few drops of special brass valve oil to the exposed valve.
- Carefully return the valve to is casing. When properly inserted, the top of the valve should easily screw back into place.

How many valves do trumpets have?
three valves
The various combinations of the trumpet’s three valves allow a complete chromatic scale to be played. In addition, a single note can be produced using several different fingerings.
How is a piston connected to the valve stem?
The piston is connected to the valve stem and hand-wheel and passes through two sealing rings which are separated by lantern bush. When assembled the two sets of the sealing rings are compressed around the piston by the load exerted along the stem.
Why are pistons called ‘right’ and ‘lefts’?
Due the valve positioning in the cylinder heads, pistons can be designed as “rights” and “lefts”. “When we refer to ‘rights and lefts’ we are referring to how the valve orientation is on that specific cylinder,” Stothers adds.
What is a piston valve used for?
A piston valve is a device that is used to control the motion of a fluid along a tube or pipe by means of the linear motion of a piston within a chamber or cylinder. Piston valves are used for fully open or fully closed for on/off regulation on steam, gas, and other fluid services.
What are the different types of valve forms?
Another valve form is the angle seat piston valve, so-named for the pneumatically actuated piston that is used to close and open the valve, which is usually a disc or plug that closes against a seat. These valves are used in steam service as well, but they differ from the piston valves discussed above and are usually sized quite a bit smaller.
