What causes oil to come out of the breather on a Harley Davidson?

Top breathing engines breath, or vent, through the top breather bolts which are threaded into the heads of a Harley Davidson motor. The air inside a motor is saturated with oil. When oil drips out of an air cleaner assembly, it is usually an indication that the air cleaner element is due to be cleaned, or changed.

How do you stop wet Sumping?

Wet sumping prevention – electrical interlock to a pressure switch in the oil line. A different approach would be to put a cut out switch at the end of the line (off the rocker feed) so that any loss of oil pressure would kill the ignition.

What causes Sumping?

Sumping is when the suction side of the oil pump does not remove enough oil from the crankcase. When the flywheels rotate in the oil they turn it into an aerated state. Thus, oil gets trapped in the crankcase and does not return to pump.

What causes oil Sumping?

The term wet sumping is used to describe when oil fills the crankcase of a dry sump system. There are two causes for this: Oil is not returning to the tank or oil is seeping through the pump while the engine is sitting unused. Both are oil pump related issues.

The oil blowing back is caused by two ailments. First the intake valve guide seal is leaking or the rings are excessively worn. Second for the oil to get blown back through the carburetor your valve clearance may be too tight or your valve or valve seats may be worn.

A dry sump is a lubricating motor oil management method for four-stroke and large two-stroke piston internal combustion engines that uses external pumps and a secondary external reservoir for oil, as compared to a conventional wet sump system.

Why is oil coming out of my carburetor?

The most likely reason is worn out rings allowing exhaust gas to pressurise the crankcase and blowing oil through the breather which is connected to the air filter on the carby side. One way to tell is to remove the coil lead from the distributor and crank up the engine.

Smoke After Warm Up Blue smoke exiting the exhaust pipe after the engine has warmed is a sign that oil is burning in the combustion chamber. Oil can enter the combustion chamber past the valve stem seals or pistons rings, so if this symptom persists then one of these components may be compromised.
