Turns out the epic wooden horse that gave the Greeks their victory was all a myth. Actually, historians are pretty much unanimous: the Trojan Horse was just a myth, but Troy was certainly a real place.

For most ancient Greeks, indeed, the Trojan War was much more than a myth. It was an epoch-defining moment in their distant past. As the historical sources – Herodotus and Eratosthenes – show, it was generally assumed to have been a real event.

The site of Hisarlik, in northwest Turkey, has been identified as being Troy since ancient times. Archaeological research shows that it was inhabited for almost 4,000 years starting around 3000 B.C. Under the leadership of Epeius, the Greeks built the wooden horse in three days.

Why is it called Trojan Horse?

Trojans take their name from the hollow wooden horse that the Greeks hid inside of during the Trojan War. The Trojans, thinking the horse was a gift, opened their walled city to accept it, allowing the Greeks to come out of hiding at night to attack the sleeping Trojans.
