Is Starship fully reusable?

Starship, as it’s known, will be a fully reusable transport system capable of carrying up to 100 people to the Red Planet. The founding ethos of Elon Musk’s private spaceflight company SpaceX was to make life multi-planetary.

What happened to the rocket once its fuel was used up?

Because the first stage must lift the entire rocket, its cargo (or payload), and any unused fuel, it’s the biggest and most powerful section. Historically, most of a rocket’s discarded parts were left to fall back down to Earth and burn up in the atmosphere.

How much fuel does Starship burn per second?

The two Solid Rocket Boosters generate a combined thrust of 5.3 million pounds, equivalent to 44 million horsepower or 14,700 six-axle diesel locomotives or 400,000 subcompact cars. At liftoff, the two Solid Rocket Boosters consume 11,000 pounds of fuel per second.

Why does Starship look so bad?

It’s a test article, built in a screaming hurry to get some engineering data, with very little attention paid to either looks or durability (except in so far as some of the data they need is about durability). During launch, tank and boosters are jettisoned and fall back to Earth after a shuttle’s initial push to the sky. Unlike the boosters, however, the external tank is not collected and reused. Instead, the tanks are discarded to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

It’s estimated that five Starship launches’ worth of fuel (as payload) would be required to refuel a single Mars-bound Starship in low-Earth orbit, and this would involve the transfer of hundreds of tons of methane and liquid oxygen. Such refueling technology would also be useful for others besides NASA.
