Is it bad if a school has a low graduation rate?

If graduation rates are low, that can tell us something about the school: it may mean students do not get the academic support they need to succeed, that they are disappointed by the faculty or staff, or that they find life at the school unaffordable. And that may give pause to a prospective student.

We see students drop to part-time status for a semester or two. Maybe they are struggling to pay for school, need to work more, or need to help out their families. Some of the more prestigious universities won’t even accept transfer students. Therefore, the graduation rates are less likely to be marred.

Students who are apathetic or bored are habitually absent, fail to complete homework, do not study, have no long- or short-term educational goals and therefore, contribute to the low graduation rate. Additionally, education may be a low priority in the home, so students see no value in attending school.
