It is among the oldest Puranas, the earliest core of text maybe from 4 century CE, continuously edited thereafter over time and it exist in numerous versions.

The main purpose of puranas is to bring the ideas from vedas close to us in the form of stories and characters. For a novice, that is the best thing to start with. At the same time, we cannot say they are not authentic. Puranas are written by great sages who have done years of penance.

Numerous versions of this Purana exist, in up to 274 or 276 chapters, all claiming to be either part of, or manuscripts of the Brahmavaivarta Purana or the Brahmakaivarta Purana.
Is there a PDF version of Garuda Purana?
