How often do chess grandmasters play?

74-75 games per year
It’s easy to see that the median number for elite grandmasters is 74-75 games per year (ironically, by doing so we get Magnus Carlsen, the highest-rated player in the world, as a role model in this respect). This should be close to the optimal amount of games/year for a person who takes chess seriously.

Why do players resign in chess?

However, GMs are often checkmated, it’s just that they resign a few moves away to preserve their dignity. At the Russian Team Champ’s yesterday, Zahar was four moves away from mating Andreikin when he resigned.

How many moves ahead does a grandmaster think?

Can chess players predict their opponent’s move?

One of the skills any new chess player envies is the power of experienced players to seemingly predict what their opponent is going to do. They get destroyed when they go up against advanced players because their every move appears to get countered. Is there some sort of psychic connection required to be an expert chess player?

What are forcing moves in chess?

Looking at all the options, they pick out the very best ones, which are usually forcing moves. A forcing move is one that forces the opponent into making a certain choice or that really limits his ability to do much. Those are the moves that their opponent is likely going to make.

What is the most common way to end a chess game?

Checkmate One of the most common ways to end a chess game is by checkmate. This happens when one of the players is threatening the other king and it cannot move to any other squares, cannot be protected by another piece and the checking piece cannot be captured. If all of these conditions are met, the attacking player wins via checkmate.

Do you have an overall chess plan?

You should have an overall plan, but you should also be able to adapt and counter attack where necessary. The way pro chess players get inside the head of their opponents and figure out what move they are going to make is that they pretend they are the opponent. They consider what their options are from that viewpoint.
