How many readings can a kanji have?

In Japanese, most kanji have at least two readings. One is derived from its original Chinese pronunciation and called on-yomi (音読み). The other is the native reading that most characters ended up with some time after their import from the continent.

How many kanji does the average person know?

Virtually every adult in Japan can recognize over 2,000 kanji. A university educated person will recognize around 3,000, and an exceptionally well-educated, well-read person, with a techincal expertise might know up to 5,000.

Can a kanji have multiple Kunyomi?

It depends on how well you want to learn how to read kanji and understand Japanese in general. So, to begin, I will say that most Japanese kanji characters only have one onyomi and one kunyomi, though many kanji, especially for verbs and adjectives, have multiple kunyomi.

Why do kanji have multiple readings?

Because of the way they have been adopted into Japanese, a single kanji may be used to write one or more different words—or, in some cases, morphemes—and thus the same character may be pronounced in different ways. From the reader’s point of view, kanji are said to have one or more different “readings”.
