According to Beth Gilbert, “The average IQ of people who stutter is 14 points higher than the national average” (“Stuttering: Myth vs. Facts”). A person who stutters might actually be smarter than you think!

What causes a person to stutter when they talk?

Researchers currently believe that stuttering is caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, language development, environment, as well as brain structure and function[1]. Working together, these factors can influence the speech of a person who stutters.

Is a stutter a mental disability?

No in no way does it stop you joining however you may find yourself being asked to attend elocution lessons. In my case I had a stress based stutter from a very young age, when I became flustered or panicked i stuttered to the point of being unable to articulate on almost any level.
