Do paramedics get blood on them?

The blood is kept in a refrigerator at the station; before each call, EMS providers decide if they need to take the blood with them. If they do not use it within two weeks, it is sent back to the hospital to be used.

Why do paramedics draw blood?

Imbalances in the homeostatic levels of blood components can help to rule in or out a myriad of pathologic conditions. EMS providers must be competent in the proper ETS blood collection techniques for the practice to expand and patients to reap the benefits. These techniques should be included in agency protocols.

Do ambulances have blood bags?

The blood is good to use for 35 total days before it expires. The helicopters have the bags of blood for the first 14 days. The ground ambulances get them for the next 14 days. If the blood still hasn’t been used, it is given to the hospitals.

What is being done to ensure continued access? As more ambulances and helicopters begin carrying blood and plasma, we will increase the supply of blood on standby on these units. That supply must be replaced every 28 (plasma) to 45 (packed red blood cells) days.

Blood is significantly better than any other fluid option to resuscitate a patient in shock—both for the clotting factors it contains and the oxygen-carrying capacity.
