Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series filming location After plenty of speculation, Amazon Studios has confirmed that Middle-Earth will once again be brought to life in the environs of New Zealand, which formed the backdrop for Peter Jackson’s award-winning trilogy.
Is LOTR set in the future?
No. Tolkien was quite clear that they take place in an imaginary past of our own world. The only way that they are post-apocalyptic is if you assume that he just didn’t bother to write about the apocalyptic events of the actual Really Much Older World of this planet.

This part of Middle-earth is suggestive of Europe, the north-west of the Old World, with the environs of the Shire resembling reminiscent of England, but, more specifically, the West Midlands, with the town at its centre, Hobbiton, at the same latitude as Oxford….

Is Middle-Earth based on England?
While the film trilogy, along with the previous Lord of the Rings adaptation, were shot in New Zealand, the books’ author JRR Tolkien drew inspiration mainly from the English landscape.
Are Hobbits based on the Irish?
Do Hobbits represent the Irish people/culture? Nope. The Shire and its inhabitants are pretty clearly and directly evoking a rural English idyll. American stereotypes of Ireland probably didn’t inform much of Tolkien’s work, at a guess.
