Why is coolant kept under great pressure in a Pressurised water reactor?

Why is coolant kept under great pressure in a Pressurised water reactor?

The pressurized water reactor (PWR) also uses ordinary or light water as both coolant and moderator (Figure 17.2). However, in the PWR system the cooling water is kept under pressure so that it cannot boil. It is the water in this second system that is allowed to boil and generate steam to drive the turbine.

What is the purpose of a reactor pressure vessel?

Reactor pressure vessels are thick steel containers that hold nuclear fuel when the reactors operate. The vessels provide one of several barriers that keep radioactive material out of the environment. NRC regulations describe how U.S. nuclear power plants must inspect, maintain and repair reactor pressure vessels.

Can a pressurized water reactor explode?

A multiple tube rupture in this system could result in a rapid loss of coolant accident in the reactor beyond the ability of the Emergency Core Cooling System to control. This could result in a meltdown of the reactor core.

Are pressurized water reactors safe?

This power can be used for industrial and residential purposes. The leftover water from the main condenser is recycled back to the stem generator. [1] Although the reactor has some disadvantages, it makes up for its deficits in the fact that it is a safe and reliable reactor.

Which is safer BWR or PWR?

Since the fluid is maintained at high pressure, so the PWR core volume is less. For the same power generation, core volume of the BWR is comparatively larger. Since the working fluid loop is separated from the primary loop, so PWR is less risky in spreading of radioactive materials owing to leakage.

How does a RBMK reactor explode?

It’s not a nuclear explosion, but a steam explosion, caused by the huge buildup of pressure within the core. That blows the biological shield off the top of the core, ruptures the fuel channels and causes graphite to be blown into the air.

What are the three necessary components inside a reactor vessel?

A reactor pressure vessel (RPV) in a nuclear power plant is the pressure vessel containing the nuclear reactor coolant, core shroud, and the reactor core.

What is the advantage of pressurized water reactor PWR?

Advantages. PWR reactors are very stable due to their tendency to produce less power as temperatures increase; this makes the reactor easier to operate from a stability standpoint. PWR turbine cycle loop is separate from the primary loop, so the water in the secondary loop is not contaminated by radioactive materials.

Which coolant is commonly used for fast breeder reactors?

A liquid metal fast breeder reactor is so named because during conversion of the fertile material into fissile material use is made of high-energy (“fast”) neutrons and the coolant employed is sodium, which remains in the liquid state (“liquid metal”) at the prevailing high working temperatures.

What is the advantage of pressurized water reactor PWR )?

What type of coolant is used in a pressurized water reactor?

The pressurized water reactor (PWR) also uses ordinary or light water as both coolant and moderator (Figure 17.2 ). However, in the PWR system the cooling water is kept under pressure so that it cannot boil.

What happens if a pressure vessel fails in a nuclear reactor?

If the reactor pressure vessel fails, there is no backup system to cool the reactor and avoid an uncontrollable meltdown of the nuclear fuel. Early in 1993, the NRC publicly identified 15 U.S. reactors where the pressure vessels had become so weakened by radiation as to call into question their continued operation.

What is a reactor coolant system (RCS)?

The Reactor Coolant System (RCS) of a typical four loop 1200 MW (e) PWR consists of the reactor core within its pressure vessel, four coolant loops with pumps, the primary side of the steam generators and a pressuriser. In addition there are a number of auxiliary and safety systems which can interface with the RCS and these are discussed later.

What is the difference between boiling water reactor and PWR?

However, in the PWR system the cooling water is kept under pressure so that it cannot boil. The PWR differs in another respect from the boiling water reactor; the primary coolant does not drive the steam turbine. Instead, heat from the primary water cooling system is captured in a heat exchanger and transferred to water in a secondary system.
