Why did anyone trust Grima Wormtongue?

Because they know how to appeal to people’s fears and wants. Grima in the books is still a slimy, crawling perverted creep. His nickname is Wormtongue for crying out loud. But in both book and film, he knows how to get to people.

How did Grima Wormtongue control Theoden?

Grima Wormtongue did not control Theoden. Wormtongue appointed himself as Theoden’s “counselor” but he did not control him. Saruman had infected Theoden’s mind and through him, controlled Rohan. Gandalf the White freed Rohan from Saruman’s control, saving Rohan basically.

How did Grima get to Theoden?

Gríma is native to Riddermark and the son of Gálmód. He secretly joined Saruman’s service under the probable guise of receiving Éowyn — Théoden’s daughter — as his reward. Unfortunately for him, he does not get his reward and is punished by Saruman for his failure to keep influence over Théoden.
