Why are semiconductors used in circuits?

Why are semiconductors used in circuits?

Semiconductors are used in many electrical circuits because we can control the flow of electrons in this material, for example, with a controlling current. Semiconductors are also used for other special properties. In fact, a solar cell is made of semiconductors which are sensitive to light energy.

Why does the semiconductor industry primarily use silicon as substrate instead of other elements?

Silicon is used because it can be used as either an insulator (doesn’t allow electricity to flow) or a semiconductor (allows a little flow of electricity). This is important for making chips.

Why do we use semiconductor instead of conductor or insulator in electronic device?

We use semiconductor because we wish a material that you can control easily the conductivity. And for this purpose, semiconductors are the best one. It is not so easy to control the conductivity of isolator and conductors. The transistor works as a switch, that is close (low resistance) or open (high resistance).

Why semiconductors have been used in the electronic industry?

Such devices have found wide application because of their compactness, reliability, power efficiency, and low cost. We always use semiconductor in Electronic device because conductivity is easily controlled in semiconductor as compared to conductors. And that’s the main reason why semiconductor are used in electronics.

Why silicon is used in semiconductor industry?

Each Silicon atom is combined with four neighboring silicon atoms by four bonds. Silicon, a very common element, is used as the raw material of semiconductors because of its stable structure. Purification of Silicon consumes large amounts of power.

Why semiconductors are used in electronics rather than conductors?

That’s why semiconductors are used in electronics rather than conductors. In Insulators, there is absolutely no flow of current. In Conductors, there is full flow of current (Zero resistance). Semiconductors, can act both as an insulator as well as a conductor based on the voltage input.

Why are semiconductor detectors better than gas detectors?

Because the solid detector materials used in semiconductor detectors are 2000 to 5000 times more dense than gases (see Table 7-1 ), they have much better stopping power and are much more efficient detectors for x rays and γ rays.

What is the flow of current in a semiconductor?

In Insulators, there is absolutely no flow of current. In Conductors, there is full flow of current (Zero resistance). Semiconductors, can act both as an insulator as well as a conductor based on the voltage input. Hence, there is a possibility to control the current flow in semiconductors.

What is the working principle of semiconductor detectors?

The basic operating principle of semiconductor detectors is analogous to that in gas ionization chambers except that a semiconductor crystal instead of a gas fills the space between the anode and cathode. When ionizing radiation is absorbed in the crystal, electron-hole pairs are created rather than electron-ion pairs.
