What is Spdif same as optical?

S/PDIF is an optical audio cable format that allows the transfer of digital audio signals from device to device without needing to convert to an analog signal first. This is beneficial since such a conversion can hurt audio quality.

What is Spdif output used for?

A common use for the S/PDIF interface is to carry compressed digital audio for surround sound as defined by the standard IEC 61937. This mode is used to connect the output of a DVD player or computer, via optical or coax, to a home theatre amplifying receiver that supports Dolby Digital or DTS.

Is Spdif and Toslink the same thing?

TOSLINK specifies the physical connector for optical cable at the physical layer. S/PDIF specifies the protocol at the data link layer. You can also transmit S/PDIF over copper wire (e.g. the other digital audio port using a RCA jack). The relationship is similar to Ethernet RJ45 and TCP/IP.

Is optical better than Spdif?

The Main Differences of The Formats: Optical (the format, not the cable) and SPDIF are both digital connection protocols. SPDIF, however, works with only 2 channels of audio or in stereo while optical is capable of carrying 8 channels instead at 44.1 or 48 Kilohertz (kHz).

How many channels can Spdif carry?

S/PDIF can carry two channels of uncompressed PCM audio or compressed 5.1/7.1 surround sound but cannot support lossless formats that require greater bandwidth.

Are Toslink and optical interchangeable?

The Toslink is needed to convert the digital audio so that you can hear volume in the wired headset. The digital optical works in conjunction with the Toslink to convert this audio. Both were necessary for me to convert audio so I could hear sound through my headset. 0 of 2 found this helpful.

Is SPDIF better than optical?

Which Should You Use? Either is fine as long as you know what you’re in for with the SPDIF or optical format. Optical carries 8 channels at 44.1/48 kHz while SPDIF carries only 2 channels or is in stereo.

Can you plug RCA into SPDIF?

Can I use RCA cables for SPDIF connections? You cannot use RCA cables for S/PDIF connections. SPDIF cables have a stereo digital connection, whereas RCA cables have a mono analog connection.

What type of devices would you connect to a SPDIF?

TECH TIPS – SPDIF CONNECTIONS EXPLAINED S/PDIF (Sony/Phillips Digital Interface) is a consumer audio connection standard for transmitting high-quality digital audio. It is primarily used for connecting home cinema (home theatre) systems, Hi-Fi, games consoles, set top boxes, computers , and other consumer entertainment devices .

Can I connect SPDIF to optical?

SPDIF can be used with optical cables and coaxial cables while the optical port can only be used with optical cables alone. If you have an optical cable on hand, you can either use the SPDIF or optical output. You can also use both.

How do I use SPDIF?

The most common use of the SPDIF interface is to transport compressed digital audio. The audio must meet the requirements defined by the IEC 61937 standard. The interface is commonly used to connect the output of DVD and other audio players to home theater receivers which support DTS or Dolby Digital surround sound capability.

What does SPDIF look like?

Noriaki Lifer. Electrical SPDIF is a coaxial cable with RCA connectors at both end. I’d call it RCA cable . It basically looks like the Red/White (or Red/Black) analog audio RCA pairs, but there is only one. Opitcal SPDIF has these funny little squarish black plugs. I’d call it “optical” cable.
