What is it like being in a relationship with someone with BPD?

A romantic relationship with someone with BPD can be, in a word, stormy. It’s not uncommon to experience a great deal of turmoil and dysfunction. However, people with BPD can be exceptionally caring, compassionate, and affectionate. In fact, some people find this level of devotion from a partner pleasant.

What does FP mean in BPD?

Now let’s look at BPD and apply that same logic, yes we seek attention, there is fear of abandonment, we have what is called an FP (favorite person) of whom we attach our existence to and rely on for emotional validation, we have trouble regulating our moods, splitting, identity confusion, and intense emotion.

Can a person with BPD have more than one FP?

So yes, FP can be multiple but they will all hear about how horrible the blacked person is. Yes, absolutely, although some pwBPD will have only one at a time; others will have multiples which may have rankings (which may arbitrarily change from time to time).

What is splitting in borderline?

Splitting is a psychological mechanism which allows the person to tolerate difficult and overwhelming emotions by seeing someone as either good or bad, idealised or devalued. This makes it easier to manage the emotions that they are feeling, which on the surface seem to be contradictory.

Can you help someone with borderline personality disorder (BPD)?

Indeed, when you love someone with borderline personality disorder (BPD), it can feel as if you are walking on eggshells, never knowing what might trigger them. But by reframing emotional manipulation in BPD, you can come to understand what truly drives your loved one’s behavior and how to help them heal.

Should you be shamed for your loved one’s BPD?

No one should be shamed for experiencing either. But if your loved one struggles with borderline personality disorder (BPD), the comparisons can often fall flat. After all, cancer doesn’t manifest in social bonds. Broken legs don’t threaten to kill themselves.

Why do people with BPD have a hard time with relationships?

A lot of people who get into BPD relationships tend to lack the emotional control needed in relationships. That’s how I was. I let myself get carried away and fall victim to these women who used me, hurt me, cheated on me and so on.

Can a person with BPD change their self-identity?

A changing self-identity is a symptom of BPD and is very present within FP relationships. It leads to extreme co-dependence. The pwBPD becomes so attached to their FP that they cannot go without talking to them or seeing them.
