What happened to the third Silmaril?

The three Silmarils had different eventual fates. One was recovered by Beren and Luthien: this stone was later taken to the Valar in the West by their descendant Earendil, as a token of repentance. The returned Silmaril was set into the sky by the Valar where it shone as a star.

Why did Fëanor create the Silmarils?

The Silmarils (Quenya pl. Silmarilli, radiance of pure light) are three fictional brilliant jewels composed of the unmarred light of the Two Trees in J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium. The Silmarils were made out of the crystalline substance silima by Fëanor, a Noldorin Elf, in Valinor during the Years of the Trees.

Several years later, Maedhros and his brothers learned that Elwing of Doriath, granddaughter of Lúthien and Beren, had inherited the Silmaril that her grandparents had recovered from Morgoth. Still driven by the Oath, Maedhros allowed Celegorm to convince him to attack Doriath.

How did Maedhros get captured and killed?

Maedhros did not trust Morgoth, and so went to meet his embassy with more men than agreed upon. But Morgoth too had been expecting treachery, and so sent further more troops, including Balrogs. When the two groups met, the Elves were quickly slain and Maedhros was captured.

Why did Maedhros burn Maglor’s hands?

But because of the evil deeds committed by the brothers to regain the jewels, they burned Maglor’s and Maedhros’ hands. Unable to bear the suffering, Maedhros cast himself and the Silmaril he carried into a fiery chasm in the Earth. Maidhros is Quenya for “Pale-glitter”.
