It has no special function. Caruncle: a crescent of modified skin that is a vestige of the nictitating membrane, or third eyelid, in lower animals. Together with the plica semilunaris, lying lateral, it becomes especially inflamed in some forms of infectious conjunctivitis. It has no special function.

The lacrimal caruncle is the small, pink, globular spot at the inner corner, or the medial canthus, of the eye. It contains both oil and sweat glands. The whitish material that sometimes accumulates in that region is from these glands. The tarsal plate is composed of connective tissue that gives support to the eyelids.

The swollen caruncle may impair fluid flow from the lacrimal gland to the punctum, triggering epiphora, although the nasolacrimal system is normal[3]–[4].

Chronic swelling could be due to non-infectious inflammatory disorders such as thyroid eye disorder, sarcoidosis and orbital pseudotumor.

Urethral caruncles are usually pink or red. If a blood clot has formed, they may turn purple or black. These growths are usually small, growing up to 1 centimeter (cm) in diameter. However, cases have been reported where they’ve have grown at least 2 cm in diameter.

Where is caruncle found in?

Caruncle is a white spongy bilobed outgrowth present near the narrow end of the seed. It partially covers the hilum (dark scar) and completely covers the micropyle (small pore). Caruncle absorbs water which percolates through the micropyle into the seed.

How do you treat a caruncle?

Most urethral caruncles can be treated conservatively with warm sitz baths and vaginal estrogen replacement. Topical anti-inflammatory drugs may also be useful.
