If your aim is to get a good private job, you’re good to go for competitive coding. But if your aim is either to do M. Tech. or to get a job in PSUs, you must prepare for GATE. Now if you want to have both options in your hand, mark your priorities.

Is programming necessary for GATE CSE?

For GATE,No you dont require that level of coding skills or knowing multiple programming languages. Only basic programming (particularly C) concepts required. For placements, yes coding skills definitely help you.
