Is the South African accent hard to understand?

It’s never made conversation difficult, and frankly, Afrikaans sounds close enough that learning the basics shouldn’t be too tough for an English speaker. Now if someone wanted to use local slang to say something I wouldn’t get, I suspect that would be easy enough until I learned enough of the dialect to catch on.
