EMDR therapy is extremely effective in treating adults who have experienced childhood trauma. Even though the past can’t be erased, EMDR therapy can help you process the traumatic memories which affect you today so that the past does not affect you as it once did.

Can EMDR treat developmental trauma?

My short answer is yes, EMDR Therapy is an incredibly valuable therapeutic for treating C-PTSD; however, this powerful modality typically requires careful modification to attend to dysregulated and dissociative symptoms that often accompany early developmental abuse or neglect.

Who shouldnt use EMDR?

Because stability must come first, you don’t use EMDR to process trauma when a patient is actively abusively using alcohol, drugs, or something to help them feel less. You can’t effectively practice EMDR phases 3 – 8 with someone who has yet to experience a safe, trusting relationship.

Why is EMDR not effective?

Childhood trauma, attachment trauma and developmental trauma such as abuse or physical or emotional neglect will take longer to process with EMDR or any type of therapy. This is mostly because it takes longer to achieve a foundation grounded by emotional stability.

Plus, reading EMDR experiences will show you that it really does work – time and time again. This is my own personal EMDR experience – everything from finding the therapy, going through the therapy, and the aftereffects.

What is the difference between EMDR and stablestability?

Stability allows you to work with other models of therapy, depending on what the client needs, especially for those with a complex trauma history. In order for EMDR to work effectively, a person needs a solid, safe foundation from which to process the trauma.
