How nuclear fusion can be used as a future power source?

Fusion power is a proposed form of power generation that would generate electricity by using heat from nuclear fusion reactions. In a fusion process, two lighter atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, while releasing energy. Devices designed to harness this energy are known as fusion reactors.

Will fusion be the future?

The future of fusion If development follows this accelerated track, nuclear fusion could amount for about 1\% global energy demand by 2060. So while this new breakthrough is exciting, it’s worth keeping in mind that fusion will be an energy source for the second part of the century – at the earliest.

How was fusion discovered?

Rutherford understood what tremendous forces could be unleashed from the atom nucleus. In a famous 1934 experiment that opened the way to present-day fusion research (including ITER), he realized the fusion of deuterium (a heavy isotope of hydrogen) into helium, observing that “an enormous effect was produced.”

Can a fusion reactor explode?

A fusion reactor will not explode, it uses plasma to generate heat and so can’t explode. If a hole was cut in the reactor during an ongoing confinement, the plasma would quickly cool off. Theoretically, we still haven’t built any fusion reactors yet.

What is hot fusion?

Nuclear fusion occurring at very high temperatures, especially as a controlled process viewed as a potential source of energy.

What is nuclear fusion and why should we care?

And it’s easy to understand why. The potential of nuclear fusion as an energy source is so bright it could blind you. It’s the fundamental reaction that has powered our sun for nearly 5 billion years, and will for about 5 billion more.

How much energy is produced in the nuclear fusion process?

The process, which requires temperatures of approximately 39 million degrees Celsius, produces 17.6 million electron volts of energy. Deuterium is a promising ingredient because it is an isotope of hydrogen.

Could nuclear fusion solve the world’s energy crisis?

If nuclear fusion can be replicated on earth, it could provide virtually limitless clean, safe and affordable energy to meet the world’s energy demand.

Will nuclear fusion usher in a new era for Humanity?

Nuclear fusion, if we ever achieve it on a large scale, will usher in a new era for humanity: one where energy conservation is a thing of the past, as the fuel for our heart’s desires will literally be without limits. Follow me on Twitter . Check out my website or some of my other work here .
