The melody of a song initially re-jogs our memory, while the lyrics allow us to relate to the song and brings meaning. Music as a medium of memory can be used by the artists to express their memories, by the listener to recall their memories and by science to bring back a memory.

Why does a song remind me of a memory?

The reason it is so easy to remember song lyrics is because the words are accompanied to a consistent beat, so this combination makes it easier for us to retrieve the memory. In regards to music bringing back a certain memory, when people listen to music it triggers parts of the brain that evoke emotions.
