How long does it take to lose an American accent?

So how long does it take to change an accent and improve English Pronunciation? With accent reduction training most people see improvement within 2 – 4 weeks. People usually achieve noticeable change in their accent, clarity and English speaking confidence within 3 months.

The older people are when they move, the less likely will they lose their native accent. But some people will simply be more adaptable than others, and I don’t know why — ear training might have something to do with it (I am also quite musical).

Because you are attuning your ear to the new accent, and putting down new neurological pathways, you can lose your accent more quickly if you listen to a native speaker through headphones. This vibrates the auditory nerve from your ear to the brain more directly making the signal more effective. You can lose your accent entirely.
