How does regex algorithm work?

A regex pattern matches a target string. The pattern is composed of a sequence of atoms. An atom is a single point within the regex pattern which it tries to match to the target string. The simplest atom is a literal, but grouping parts of the pattern to match an atom will require using ( ) as metacharacters.

How does regex matcher work?

Regex only defines certain patterns for matching text. Backtracking regex engines: A backtracking regex engine walks through the regex, attempting to match the next token in the regex to the next character in the text. If a match is found, the engine advances through both the regex and the subject string.

How are regex engines implemented?

A regex engine executes the regex one character at a time in left-to-right order. This input string itself is parsed one character at a time, in left-to-right order. Once a character is matched, it’s said to be consumed from the input, and the engine moves to the next input character.
