How do xylem and phloem work together?

How do xylem and phloem work together?

Xylem transports water and mineral salts from the roots up to other parts of the plant, while phloem transports sucrose and amino acids between the leaves and other parts of the plant.

What is xylem and phloem called together?

Hint: Xylem and phloem are collectively known as vascular bundles. Xylem transport water and minerals from the roots to the entire plant body while phloem has the responsibility to transport the organic food inside the body of the plant.

Why is xylem above phloem in a leaf?

What is the advantage of the xylem being uppermost in the leaf vein – facing the upper epidermis? I believe the xylem is on top because in the stem, xylem is inside the stem with phloem on the outside. Therefore it is easier to join up the xylem and phloem between leaf and stem if the xylem is on top of the leaf veins.

What is the purpose of the waxy cuticle on a leaf?

Answer: The waxy covering on plant leaves, young stems, and fruit is called the “cuticle”. It is composed of cutin, a wax-like material produced by the plant that is chemically a hydroxy fatty acid. The purpose of this covering is to help the plant retain water.

Why are xylem and phloem complex tissue different from each other?

Xylem and phloem are vascular tissues. They bring about the conduction of water, minerals and food to different plant parts. Xylem and phloem are made of different cell types, who come together to perform a common function, hence they are called complex tissues.

How xylem and phloem are different from each other?

Xylem is the complex tissue of plants, responsible for transporting water and other nutrients to the plants. Phloem is living tissue, responsible for transporting food and other organic materials. Xylem consists of dead cells (parenchyma is the only living cells present in the xylem).

Is xylem or phloem closer to the surface?

In a stem or root this means that the xylem is closer to the centre of the stem or root while the phloem is closer to the exterior. In a leaf, the adaxial surface of the leaf will usually be the upper side, with the abaxial surface the lower side.

Why do leaves have a waxy cuticle?

A waxy layer known as the cuticle covers the leaves of all plant species. The cuticle reduces the rate of water loss from the leaf surface. They can also reduce the rate of transpiration by blocking air flow across the leaf surface.

Why the upper surface of the leaf is greener and shinier?

The upper surface of leaf is greener than its lower surface because of the presence of mesophyll cells which contains chlorophyll. Due to more amount of chlorophyll on the upper surface more light energy is trapped hence more amount light of green wavelength is reflected.
